We were at a Hurricane Wings and realized that KIDS EAT FREE. What a great feeling! It even feels better knowing you’re not paying – especially when your kids don’t finishing their chicken nuggets. Just watch out for squirrels…they got our pumpkins last year! ● If the cut edges of your jack-o’-lantern are curling, re-hydrate the pumpkin by soaking it in a tub of water overnight. After removing, allow the pumpkin to drain for half an hour and pat dry. ● While your jack-o’-lantern is on display, periodically mist it with water to help keep it hydrated. ● After carving, coat the cut edges and the inside of the jack-o’-lantern with Vaseline. And why not? Isn’t that one of the reasons we live on Long Island? It’s a quick getaway, fun and cheap (okay, it used to be cheap to park but it’s still worth it). Hitting the beach can feel like a mini vacation if it’s the right beach. Before the summer is up, I’d like to trade beach secrets.  Where do you go? Why do you go there? What makes “your” beach special. Sure Jones Beach is great but many small beaches can be better because each has its own character.  Here’s a few we do every year: NICKERSON BEACH – It’s on Lido Boulevard on Nassau’s South Shore. Nice beach. Fairly quiet. Nice new playground for kids. COREY BEACH – It’s in Bayport on Suffolk County’s South Shore. So please keep that in mind.  Our first target is Block Island.  I haven’t been there in 17 years which is about how many miles of beaches it has.  Bring on the windswept dunes, gently rolling hillsides dotted with wildflowers and blackberry vines, freshwater ponds and I’m sold. It’s basically an old-fashioned family beach vacation. Even getting to Block Island is fun. Hop aboard a ferry and take in the scenery. I used to make up maps for my now 16 year old daughter that would take us together around the block. She was 6 then and still remembers it.Place a prize at the end of the scavenger hunt too! Just be sure to make sure that all clues are safe for everyone's age. It's a lego exhibit! The New York sculptor, Nathan Sawaya, is among the most prominent of contemporary artists working with LEGO® blocks and you can find his work at the Nassau County Museum of art! While your kids will appreciate the use of Legos in his work, the message behind it is actually pretty deep. Art includes the eight-foot-high Pushing Against, a red figure with raised arms, and the five-foot high The Courage Within, a mostly grey work highlighted by a view into the figure's red abdomen. Other works in the exhibition include Trapped, a two-foot-high red figure enclosed within a box; Strength of Spirit, a two-foot high hand holding a small human figure; and Goodbye, a two-and-a-half foot high grey figure losing its parts as it walks away.
