Critical Signs You're Exercising Too Hard

Exercising is one of the BEST things you can do for your health. It helps keep the weight off, which protects you from heart disease, cancer, stroke and a slew of other diseases. However, it is possible to exercise too much – and that’s NOT good for you. Dr. Gabe Mirkin is a sports medicine physician and author of The Healthy Heart Miracle. He says that people who push themselves too hard, or who fail to notice red flags that they’re overdoing it, risk serious injuries – even death. So, here are the most critical signs that you need to back off, courtesy of the Bottom Line Personal.

Sudden dizziness, chest pain, an irregular heartbeat, or unusual shortness of breath: These are signs that there’s not enough blood getting to your brain, your heart, or your body tissues in general. Any of these can signal a potentially serious cardiovascular problem, such as a heart attack. Mirkin says if you experience any of these symptoms, stop exercising and immediately get emergency help. You may have an underlying medical condition.

More red flags: Chills, severe muscle burning, or blurred vision. If these happen in hot weather, or inside a hot building – STOP EXERCISING! Mirkin says you could be having a heat stroke, which is a potentially fatal condition. If you don’t feel better right after you stop your workout – again, get to the ER. Your body temperature could be so high that you’ll need to be cooled right away to prevent brain damage.

If you feel pain or tenderness in a specific spot while you’re exercising, and it won’t go away - stop for the day. Otherwise you could injure a bone, tendon or ligament. These injures are always preceded by tenderness in the area. Don’t try to compromise by doing a light workout – that’ll only make it worse. Wait until the pain is completely gone before you do any more exercising. A full day of resting should do the trick.
