The MTA has proposed an average fare hike of 4.4% for Long Island Rail Road rider and making electronic LIRR tickets automatically active from the moment they are purchased, rather than having to be manually activated by users. Officials have complained that passengers regularly wait to activate their e-tickets until a conductor comes around. Currently, one-way and round-trip tickets are valid for 60 days from the date of purchase. Under the new proposal that would be reduced to just four hours. All of the proposed changes still require approval from the MTA Board.
