The Trump administration announced Wednesday that construction on a $7 billion makeover of Penn Station will begin by the end of 2027. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy called the transit hub’s current condition “unacceptable,” citing aging infrastructure and overcrowded corridors.
Under the plan, Amtrak will take the lead—ousting the MTA—after securing a $43 million federal grant for early development and engineering work. The project envisions a 250,000-square-foot, single-level facility with new retail, housing, and passenger amenities.
The formal development process begins in October 2025, with a master developer selected by May 2026.
