Mariah Carey won the Video Vanguard Award at the MTV VMAs at UBS Arena. Surprisingly, it was her first VMA ever, and she also took home her second for Best R&B for “Type Dangerous.”

Lady Gaga shocked everyone by actually showing up for the start of show and accepting the award for Artist of the Year! She managed to make it from UBS Arena back to Madison Square Garden in time to play her final NYC show of her Mayhem Ball tour. Gaga had the most nominations (12) and won four: Artist of the Year, Video of the Year (“Die with a Smile”), Best Direction (“Abracadabra”), and Best Collaboration (“Die with a Smile”).

Alex Warren won Best New Artist and performed his hit, “Ordinary.”

Sabrina Carpenter also walked away with two awards: Best Album for “Short ‘n’ Sweet” and Best Pop Artist.
