With dangerously cold temperatures hitting Long Island authorities and organizations across the Island are working to provide people in need with shelter.

Warming centers  will be open across Nassau and Suffolk counties starting Friday morning.

Suffolk police say officers will be checking wooded areas where homeless people are known to stay, as well as abandoned vehicles. Nassau Police will also provide rides to the shelters.
