A 9-year-old boy died in a multi-vehicle, wrong-way crash caused by his mother around 2:20 a.m. Thursday on the Southern State Parkway in Islip.
State Police said four vehicles were involved. Prior to the collision, Suffolk police witnessed the vehicle traveling in the wrong direction and attempted to stop that it, however, the driver sped up and refused to stop.
The mother has been arrested on multiple charges including operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.
All the other individuals involved in the crash were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injurers.
